Counselling & Psychotherapy in Reading
Most of us at one point or another feel extremely stressed by life circumstances, when troubles, fears, and anxieties become too overwhelming, times when depression leaves us feeling helpless and alone. It may seem that there is no way out but with the right support and guidance you can regain control of your life and emotions. Talking to a professionally trained therapist can be most supportive and beneficial in exploring the connection between our emotions and what is happening to us, as well as looking at our options e.g. searching and finding new ways of thinking, feeling and responding towards others, ourselves, and our situation.
Working from my office in Reading, Berkshire, I offer a safe, confidential and trusting environment which are essential for building a strong therapeutic relationship (the relationship between therapist and client) and an effective therapeutic process (building the conditions for growth and change). I offer both brief counselling, which is helpful where immediate help is needed to resolve an immediate crisis, overwhelming stress, habits or life transition such as loss, divorce, career change etc. and long term psychotherapy, which is more suitable for mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders etc.
Counselling offers you the opportunity to explore your thoughts and feelings and gives you a sense of being deeply listened and understood. Working with a counsellor you can resolve conflicts that prevent you from being your authentic self and from enjoying your life. The counselling relationship and process creates the right conditions for you to grow emotionally, and to gain the insight needed for change and transformation. Counselling offers you a safe, private space to talk about your issues or difficulties in complete confidence, without being judged, allowing you to explore your life, relationships and emotions in a way that is not possible with friends and family.
Counselling helps you to:
- Gain a deeper understanding of yourself, your relationships and current situation
- Identify and review the patterns and triggers for your habitual thoughts, emotions and behaviours
- Connect to, express and release your emotions safely
- Identify and reconnect to your true self, your unique qualities, strengths and resources
- Explore your choices and options
- Change your limiting beliefs and conditioned responses so that you can respond from an empowered position
- Let go of negative thoughts and emotions so that you can move forward in your life
Psychotherapy is an approach to therapy tends to be long term and open ended. It is generally an investigative process whereby the root cause of thoughts and feelings are explored with a view to bringing awareness, understanding and insight. Once the causes are identified, psychotherapy helps the individual to come to terms with their past experiences and events and enables them to develop new emotional responses through change. Feelings, thoughts, wishes, memories and dreams can be explored within the safety of the therapeutic relationship. Individuals can be helped to understand unconscious processes which impact and affect their everyday patterns of thoughts and behaviours. In this way, Psychotherapy may gradually bring about a greater degree of self- awareness and deeper sense of self-understanding which enable the individual to find more appropriate and healthier ways of responding to the people and circumstances in their life.
